At the Education First Compact meeting on January 5, 2012, School Reform Commissioners Lorene Cary and Feather Houstoun discussed the search for the next School District of Philadelphia Superintendent.
They discussed the current educational landscape in Philadelphia, the process of the search, and criteria for the new superintendent. These included:
- A team-builder able to coordinate and motivate a diverse group of managers of different types of schools in different types of settings
- A relationship-builder who is able to build creative partnership with numerous external stakeholders to bring resources to individual schools and groups of schools
- Ability to rethink the district's service model, moving closer to autonomy for individual schools and decreased centralization
