This report shows the results of the 2008 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) arts assessment, which was administered to a nationally representative sample of 7,900 eighth-grade public and private school students.

  • The creating task scores in visual arts were also higher for White and Asian/Pacific Islander students than for their Black and Hispanic peers
  • Average scores for girls were 10 points higher than for boys in music and 11 points higher in visual arts
  • Girls also outperformed boys in creating visual art
    • New York City has made the arts a priority for its public schools
    • The arts enrich children's lives and learning, and all students deserve the opportunity to experience a rich arts education
    • NYC's focus on the arts began with the a curriculum framework for what students should know, understand, and be able to achieve in dance, music, theater, and visual arts
    • ArtsCount, an initiative designed to provide greater accountability for arts education in schools was launched in 2007.
