Eric Braxton to Lead West Philadelphia Parent Outreach Team

Expanding the Ed Fund's community involvment in West Philadelphia, Eric Braxton, Small Schools Program Coordintor, is now leading the West Philadelphia Parents Outreach Team. Comprised of parents, community members, faith-based leaders, teachers, and students from West Philadelphia, the outreach team was charged with the following goals:

  • To support larger numbers of parents being part of the transformation of West Philadelphia High School.
  • To support parents in being more active in the lives of their children.
  • To connect parents with resources they need to support their families.
  • To develop a cadre of parent leaders who can engage other parents.

By working with parents and guardians to identify concerns, Braxton and the West Philadelphia Parents Outreach Team hope to develop leadership skills among parents while encouraging them to become active supporters of local school improvement.

Kensington to Get a Fourth Small School

The School District of Philadelphia announced plans to develop a fourth Kensington high school with an urban education theme. Since 2005, the Ed Fund has worked with Youth United for Change to engage students, parents, and community members around the development of Kensington’s new small schools.

Ed Fund Staff Onsite for Groundbreaking of New West Philly High

Small Schools Program Coordinator Eric Braxton and Ed Fund Director of Civic Engagement Brian Armstead were on hand for the groundbreaking of the new West Philadelphia High School building on October 26, 2009. Also present for the groundbreaking were School District of Philadelphia Superintendent Dr. Arlene C. Ackerman and representatives from West Philadelphia High School Community Partners—a group of dedicated West Philadelphia community members convened by the Ed Fund.

Since 2005, the Ed Fund has worked with the Philadelphia Student Union to engage students, parents, and community members around the development of West Philadelphia’s new small schools.
