Workshop Outlines - Fall 2008

Student teachers will meet in grade-alike classrooms for these professional development Insitutes and have an opportunity to engage with others who are working in similar classrooms. Those attending the workshops will learn and reflect upon what research says, learn best practices, discuss the importance of diversity on teaching and learning, and better understand the dynamics of the partnership between student teacher and cooperating teacher.

A variety of engaging methods will be used, including: sample teacher lesson plans, materials from the Office of Curriculum and Instruction, short stories, representative diagrams, charts, interactive games, role plays, and video clips. All materials will be provided.

Fall 2008, DAY I, September 20 : Classroom Management
The focus of this first session of the series is on creating effective classroom environments.

K-8 Student teachers will:

  • Revisit the developmental stages of K-8 students through the eyes of practicioners
  • Unpack the PDE 430 and connect the 4 categories to effectively support classroom management and instructional practices
  • Network with other student teachers in Philadelphia schools from a variety of universities
  • K-8 student teachers, in addition to workshop materials, will receive a copy of “Yardsticks, Children in the Classroom Ages 4-14,” and “Classroom Management Simplified.”

9-12 Student teachers will:

  • Learn about and reflect on classroom management styles and recent research about adolescent development
  • Acquire and practice some new classroom management strategies for common classroom management issues
  • Network with other high school student teachers in Philadelphia schools from a variety of universities
  • 9-12 student teachers, in addition to workshop materials, will receive two books: "Got Discipline" and "Secrets of the Teenage Brain."

Fall 2008, DAY II, October 18: Core Curriculum, Literacy
In the second session, K-8 participants will focus on the School District of Philadelphia's Literacy Curriculum:

  • Reflect on the components of the Comprehensive Literacy Framework
  • Review how to use "Year at a Glance" and "Planning and Scheduling Timelines"
  • Learn about writing components charts
Activities include but are not limited to: an Interactive Read-Aloud; “Organizing the Classroom for the Literacy Block,” and introduction to a sample week-long literacy block.

9-12 participants will meet with Curriculum specialists from the Office of Curriculum and Instruction of the School District of Philadelphia from their area of certification. They will discuss curriculum, assessment and instruction.

Fall 2008, DAY III, November 1: Core Curriculum, Math
At the third and final session in the series, K-8 participants will be introduced to the Math Instruction Model—developed by the School District of Philadelphia and based on NCTE standards—to examine components of the model and to understand what skills their students need to reach proficiency in mathematics. Student teachers will come away from this session having acquired new teaching and learning strategies.

  • Each participant will receive a set of the “24” game for their grade level.
9-12 Participants will:
  • Discuss effective direct and indirect classroom management strategies and techniques
  • Share observations about observed classroom management styles
  • Strengthen the link between effective classroom management and teaching that actively engages students in learning
  • Practice and share a variety of teaching strategies that reflect differentiated instruction designed to meet a variety of learning styles
  • Receive a packet of resource materials, as well as two books: "Why Didn't I Learn This in College" and "Fires in the Bathroom "
