On December 1st, 2021, local, state, and federal officials joined School District of Philadelphia and Philadelphia Education Fund leadership to announce the award of a $5 million TRIO Talent Search grant from the U.S. Department of Education. This grant renews our College Access Program funding at five Philadelphia high schools and enables us to add a sixth — Frankford High School.
Through CAP, students are supported with one-on-one advising, college readiness workshops, recruiter sessions, college visits and signature events throughout their high school years. After graduation, students who participated in the program are eligible to apply for PEF’s Philadelphia Scholars Last Dollar Scholarship that closes the gap between financial aid and the actual cost of college attendance.
Our CAP schools are: Frankford High School, John Bartram High School, Olney Charter High School, Roxborough High School, Horace Furness High School, and Kensington Creative and Performing Arts (KCAPA) High School.
We were thrilled to be joined by elected officials whose districts include Frankford High, and particularly by two Frankford alumni: PA Representative Jason Dawkins and Tia Watson, Regional Director of the Office of U.S. Senator Bob Casey. PA State Senator Christine Tartaglione; Dr. William Hite, Superintendent, School District of Philadelphia; Dr. Michael Calderone, Frankford High School Principal; and John Ginelli, Chair, Philadelphia Education Fund also attended the event.
