Participation in out-of-school time (OST) programs, especially in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) has been shown to be beneficial for youth, particularly youth who are underserved. These benefits include promoting academic success, health and well-being, and identity development.
PEF’s Middle/High Afterschool STEM Fellows Program is a professional development series designed for Middle and High School District of Philadelphia (SDP) staff who work in public schools and wish to take after school programs from concept to execution. We are seeking individuals who wish to enhance an existing or create a new afterschool program to work directly with students. PEF’s McKinney Center for STEM Education will offer hands-on learning, peer support, and and resources during this six-week virtual program, beginning January 31st.
Program outcomes include a network of peers from whom participants can receive feedback and support, knowledge of existing resources and content knowledge to design and implement programming, and finally, a capstone project where staff outline in detail their programming using our nuts and bolts template.
Examples of some programs previous participants have created or enhanced include:
- Science Olympiad
- Girls who Code
- Lego League
- Gardening Club
This is a virtual, evening 6-week course. In addition to gaining EC credit from SDP central offices to run the program, SDP staff also enjoy the following benefits as a result of successful course completion:
- SDP compensation at PD rate for their time in the six week course
- $100 stipend for supplies
- ACT 48 credits
