Fostering College Readiness Trip to Pennsylvania College of Technology

By Elizabeth Isanuk Posted: March 27, 2024

On Friday, March 22, a group of 19 students and chaperones boarded a coach bus to make the 3.5 hour drive to Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport, PA., coordinated by PEF’s Fostering College Readiness (FCR) program. This group of students represented schools including Olney, Vaux Big Picture, Frankford, The U School, Mastery-Pickett, and Abraham Lincoln.

FCR works to link students with experience in the foster care system to their financial aid entitlements as well as opportunities like Immensitas across the Commonwealth. Penn College is one of the three institutional partners of the Immensitas Scholarship, an initiative of the Philadelphia Education Fund and the Brook J. Lenfest Foundation, which covers room, board and expenses such as books, computers, essentials for dorm living, while simultaneously leveraging an extensive support system for participants.

After arriving on campus, the group was welcomed by Shelley Moore, Ed.D., Senior Director of the Center for Career Design, and Bryce Winder, Coordinator of Admissions Events & Communications, for an admissions and program overview. After a buffet lunch in the cafeteria, which was kindly provided by Penn College, students broke into smaller groups for lab visits led by college professors and instructors. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to enjoy a deeper look at Penn College’s hands-on and innovative areas of study, including Automotive, Surgical Technology, Dental Hygiene, and Plastics & Polymers.

We are so appreciative of Penn College for graciously hosting our group and generously sponsoring the mode of transportation, providing lunch for all guests, and arranging the engaging lab visits. And thank you to PEF Senior Manager of Persistence and College Partnerships, Madeline Birkner, along with College Access Program staff members Sara Walker Adedeji, Brandi Ashley, and Dennis Villacorta for accompanying the FCR students on this trip.
