From Foster Care to the Graduation Stage – Supporting College Students Leaving “the System”
Youth involved in foster care experience unique challenges and barriers to educational attainment. Fewer than 2% of youth formerly in foster care complete a bachelor’s degree before age 25 compared with 24% of the general population. Match that startling data with the fact that Philadelphia has the highest rate of family separation in all major cities in the country, and you can’t ignore the fact that there is an educational emergency facing the most vulnerable young people in our city.
Supporting success for foster and former-foster care youth requires thoughtful and trauma-informed interventions at not just the high school level, but throughout a young person’s time in college and beyond. But what is being done, locally and nationally, to bridge these gaps and nurture success?
Register for the March 4th session of PEF’s Education First Compact to learn more about this important topic. We’ll be joined by:
- Brook Lenfest, President, Brook J. Lenfest Foundation
- Tori Nuccio, Deputy Director of Financial Aid, West Chester University
- Cecily White, Senior Program Coordinator, Camden Fellows, Rutgers University-Camden
